The 19th-century Villa Les Palmiers, also known as the Palais du Marbre, is the highlight of West Nice. As I outline in Nice Uncovered, the history of this magnificent palace is fascinating. In its golden age, the palace once welcomed Napoleon III and his wife. The palace garden (above) is a haven of peace with classical sculpture, shady lanes and reflecting pools.

The interior of the residence is now devoted to the Municipale Archives and is normally closed to the public but on the recent Heritage Days weekend, all the downstairs rooms were opened to visitors. Even though I had spent some time in the Archives reading room researching my book, all the other rooms remained off-limits. I was amazed at what lay beyond my reading room! The wrought iron staircase, frescoes, multicolored marble and woodwork were outstanding.

And check out the old elevator!

So the garden is always open and now you can take a free guided tour of the interior two Fridays a month through February. See the schedule here. You will need to call and reserve at 04 93 86 77 44. It’s worth it!

Villa Les Palmiers

The Heritage Days are here again! Les Journées du Patrimoine is the highlight of September for history, archaeology, art and museum buffs. Taking place next weekend, September 21-22, it’s a time to celebrate Nice’s varied culture. Nearly all museums are free, some with special guided tours (in French of cours) and exhibits. In Nice Uncovered: Walks Through the Secret Heart of a Historic City I discuss several important landmarks that are infrequently open such as the Villa Les Palmiers, the Holy Cross Chapel of the White Penitents, the Hotel de Ville, Palais de l’Agriculture, La Semeuse and the Chateau Valrose. If you haven’t paid a visit, now’s the time.

In other neighborhoods, highlights include the Victorine Studios which was once France’s “little Hollywood”, a must-stop for cinephiles and the Observatory with great views over the coast. I’m unfamiliar with the Trotabas Campus of the University of Nice Cote d’Azur but I’m looking forward to checking out Chagall’s masterpiece Odysseus. The Villa Dreamland also sounds like an exciting discovery.

Make reservations now! Places are limited.

Between 2004 and 2010, Jànluc Sauvaigo illustrated a series of sketches from the “popular tale of Nice”, with Mont Chauve as a setting, and thus Les 36 vues du mont Chauve were born. The first card was initially inspired by the Japanese painter Hiroshige, for the others, Jànluc Sauvaigo called upon Hokusai and his famous Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji. The author would say “I wanted to celebrate in my own way a magical place in the country. And in Nice, Mont Chauve was an obvious choice. It can be seen from the Paillon and Var basins, almost everywhere. […] The series began at the end of the 19th century and continued for fifty years, until around 1925.”

CALIFORNIA D’AZUR, territory of the same

In architecture, in urban forms or in landscapes, there is a sense of déjà vu between California and the Côte d’Azur.
In these two places, reality and fiction have so mutually nourished each other in half a century of formulating modernity that the exhibition navigates, to provide the keys, in a conglomerate of real and mental images as an architectural fact.
Articulated around a temporal and spatial frieze constructed as a mirror between the West Coast and the Riviera, it highlights contemporary issues that speak to everyone (housing, urban forms, landscape, mobility, “change of scenery”, lifestyles, etc.), but in a way that not everyone will have thought of.

From June 28 to September 29, 2024, the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona and the Musée Matisse in Nice are joining forces to organize an exhibition dedicated to the relationship between the works of Henri Matisse and Joan Miró. MiróMatisse. Beyond Images reveals the deep, lasting and constructive ties that the two artists had, as well as their conceptions of art. The exhibition aims to go “beyond images” by going beyond the clichés about Matisse, painter of the “joie de vivre”, and Miró, inventor of monsters, while showing that they based their creation on a critique of the tradition of images in the West.
As part of this exhibition, the Musée Matisse Nice will offer specific events and activities in connection with the European Heritage Days.

Digging the Riana: Exhibition, scientific animation

  • Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Digging the Riana captures past and contemporary traces of water in the Ariane district: a palimpsest of streams and rivulets, indicator trees, a few pipes and gutters allow us to follow the streams, the béals and the canals buried underground, and, in a few places, a washhouse, a cave and artistic petrifications stop us. These heritage elements are revealed by means of an investigation provided with photographs, drawings, paintings, poems and sculptures from which memory and history emerge.
